How Long Does a Hypnotherapy Session Last? The Short Answer

So, how long does a hypnotherapy session last? A first hypnosis session with me lasts 90 minutes. Follow-up sessions usually run about 60 minutes. Stop smoking is the one exception: it’s a single 2-hour session followed by one follow-up.

I’ve been a certified hypnotist since 2004, and I’ve found these lengths give us enough time to do real work without rushing. Long enough to make a change, short enough that you won’t need to pack a lunch.

But the clock is only part of the story. What matters more is how that time is used, and what you do between sessions. Here’s what to expect.

What Happens in a 90-Minute First Session

Your first session is always the longest. That’s because we’re starting from the beginning, and I want to understand you, not just the habit you want to change.

The First 15 to 20 Minutes: Getting Clear on the Real Issue

Before your session, you’ll fill out an online intake form. We start by going over it together.

This part matters more than most people expect. The habit you come in with isn’t always the main issue. Sometimes stress, a big life change, or an old regret is what keeps setting the habit off. When we find that “prime issue,” the work gets easier and the results tend to last longer.

We’ll talk about:

  • What you want to stop or start
  • When and where the habit shows up
  • How you want to feel instead

The Hypnosis Work

The rest of the session is where we work on the issue together. Hypnosis is a natural, focused state of attention. You’ve been in it before, like when you’re lost in a good book or you drive home and don’t remember the trip.

In that focused state, mental noise quiets down. That makes it easier to work with the part of your mind that runs habits on autopilot. You stay aware and in control the whole time. Nobody’s going to make you cluck like a chicken.

Remember this: you’re not broken. Your brain learned a pattern. And what was learned can be updated.

The End of the Session: Your Next Steps

We finish by looking at what comes next. For some people, one session is enough. For others, I’ll suggest follow-up sessions or a program. If I think something else would serve you better, I’ll tell you that too.

Why Follow-Up Sessions Are Shorter

Follow-up sessions usually last about 60 minutes. By then, we already know your story, your triggers, and your goals. We don’t need to start from scratch.

That means we can go straight to the work. The sessions are more focused, so we get a lot done in less time.

Why I Don’t Offer 20- or 30-Minute Sessions

You may see shorter hypnosis sessions offered elsewhere. In my experience, effective change doesn’t happen in 20 or 30 minutes.

Here’s why. The first part of a session is spent getting clear on the real issue. Skip that, and you’re only working on the surface. Then the hypnosis work needs its own time: time to settle into a focused state, time to work on the pattern, and time to rehearse the new response in the real moments where the old habit shows up. Squeeze all of that into half an hour, and something important gets cut.

A short session might feel relaxing, and relaxing is nice. But you came to change a pattern, and that deserves the full time.

The only 20-minute meeting I offer is the free consultation. That’s a conversation to see if we’re a fit, not a hypnosis session.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

This depends on what you want to change. Here’s what’s typical in my practice.

Fears and Phobias: Usually One Session

For a fear or phobia, one session is usually enough. A fear is often a single learned response to one trigger. When that response changes, a lot can shift in a short time.

Stop Smoking: One 2-Hour Session Plus a Follow-Up

Stop smoking is special, so it gets its own format. It’s one 2-hour session and one follow-up.

Smoking is rarely just one habit. It’s tied to your morning coffee, your drive, your breaks, and your stress. The extra time lets us work through all the moments where you’d normally reach for a cigarette.

Weight Loss: A Program of 2 to 3 Sessions

Weight loss is always a program of about 2 to 3 sessions. Eating habits run deep and show up many times a day. They’re linked to comfort, stress, routine, and even how we were raised. Changing them takes more than one session, and that’s normal.

What Happens Between Sessions

Session length is only part of the plan. What you do between sessions is what helps results hold in daily life.

After your session, you’ll get a hypnosis audio made for your specific issue. Here’s how to use it:

  • Listen daily at first, while the new pattern is forming
  • Then listen weekly to keep it strong

If you’re in a program, you’ll also get access to videos and tools to support you along the way.

Think of it like learning a new route to work. The first few trips take attention. After a while, you take the new road without thinking. Repetition, not willpower, is what makes a change stick.

Is Hypnosis Right for You?

Hypnosis supports behavior change and well-being. It isn’t a substitute for medical or mental health care. If you have a medical issue, a doctor or other licensed clinician should be part of your plan, and I’ll refer you to one when that’s the right step.

Hypnosis also works best when you’re ready for change. That’s why I offer a free consultation first.
