What worries you as an aging baby boomer?

They say that time flies when you are having fun! And then you get old… Well, it doesn’t have to be that way. After all, age is just a number and how old you feel is just a state of mind.

With that said do you feel younger than the D.O.B. on your driver’s license?

The famous developmental psychologist Erik Erikson discussed how our personalities and social development evolves over 8 stages in our lives with the last culminating in ego integrity versus despair when we become seniors. What he was basically saying was that when we reach senior citizenship we either look back on our lives and embrace/accept what we’ve accomplished and who we’ve become, or we shake our heads and ask ourselves, “What might have been?

Obviously, when we embrace our histories we have a great sense of ego integrity–we like who and what we are. Unfortunately, many people wind up on the other side of the coin, one of despair.

They look back on their lives and see things as a complete waste of time. Many kept waiting for something to happen, to magically change their lives but that “change” never came. What they didn’t realize is that they were and are the change!

If you are one of those who worry about retiring, or are retired and believe your life is over, think again! You can still be whatever you want to become and there is no time like the present to become the change you most want to see in your life.

For most, quality of life is at the forefront of truly living. You are never too old to invest in healthy lifestyles and activities/situations that bring love, peace and joy. A famous best-selling author/TV evangelist (Possibility Thinker) Dr. Robert H. Schuller once told me, “If it’s going to be then it’s up to me!

How true, given that he is in his mid-80’s and still living his life as if it were 30 years ago. He said, it’s all about perception and how you see yourself. So, see yourself as young, happy, productive and full of life. How do you do this?

There are a host of things you can do to think, feel and act young.

First, be around positive people with positive mindsets. You become who you associate most with and vice versa. If you hang around “old” people who think, feel, act and complain a lot, that will bring you down. It is important to do the things you like and make you feel good!

Try to stay active. If you can, walk for 20 minutes 3-4 times a week. It will not only encourage your body to stay healthy or become healthier, it will also balance your brain and keep it fit. Along with walking, try to eat healthy–low fat diets, avoiding red meats and unsaturated fatty foods while eating your fruits, veggies and fiber filled foods. This will definitely help you feel loads lighter and healthier.

Try to read good, inspirational books.

Read autobiographies and self-help books which teach you and encourage you to harmonize all aspects of your life. Along with great books/literature, try to meditate on a daily basis. Meditation can be simple or more intense, if there is such a thing when it comes to meditation.

Self-hypnosis MP3’s are an amazing way to feel great as you relax, relieve stress and develop new mindsets for living.

In articles to follow, we will examine ways to live and incorporate healthier activities and mindsets into becoming a “new you” or “older you with a new, positive outlook” so you can still be or become your best self. You know, it is never too late to teach an old dog new tricks.

Well, no need to think of yourself as an old dog, rather a pup in positive, possibility training!
