Nutritionists and Doctors are in heated debate when it comes to understanding why we gain weight and how to lose it. Maybe you’ve read about it already or seen it on TV in shows such as Dr Oz?
When it comes to food and weight loss there’s so much conflicting information out there it’s no wonder you’re confused and not successful at making the weight loss journey once – but instead are making it multiple times with no end in sight!
On the debate, one side chalks weight gain up to emotional eating and it’s all “in your head” so a mixture of therapy and the right foods is the remedy, while the other argues we gain weight because we eat foods that are addictive and the solution is to eradicate those from our diet completely.
If the “experts” can’t even agree why you gain weight then it’s no wonder you feel “lost” on choosing the right weight loss solution for youself.
Well, don’t worry. Read this entire message to get clarity about what to do next.
My Name is Erika Slater, CH. I’m a Certified Hypnotherapist with practices in Upton and Grafton, Massachusetts. Since 2004 I’ve been helping people get to, and stay at, their right size with my private weight loss hypnosis program. I’ll explain how it may be the right program for you and demystify some of the confusing arguments for you.
But first back to the debate about weight gain causes and whether it’s due to emotional eating or food addictions.
The reality is it can be either causing you to increase your dress or trouser size, and most likely – both. Clearly, it is wrong to pigeon-hole everybody to fit into one person’s neat view of the world to support their doctrine, and thereby propose a solution that may not work for you.
What we do know is the answer to weight loss is more complex than just burning more calories than you consume – this simplistic approach has been dis-proven in many studies.
The fact is our relationship with food is complex and in order to avoid weight gain and be successful at losing weight requires a program that has multiple elements to tackle multiple causes.

When you struggle to lose weight it can be one or more of the following working against you: the chemistry of your body, food cravings, portion sizes and your habits – more about these below.
The Chemistry of Your Body:
If you’re overweight, you could be suffering from a chemical imbalance that can be corrected.
- This could be caused by a fat burning hormone being too low, or
- Your hunger hormone is too high so you feel hungry all the time, or
- You’ve a blood sugar imbalance making it hard to burn fat, or
- You’re creating too much cortisol caused by stress that creates belly fat.
And of course these are not mutually exclusive, meaning you could have more than one imbalance going on in your body. The correction is to get rid of the foods that aggravate these factors, and substitute with those that don’t, and thereby put the chemistry of your body back in alignment.

Addicted to Cravings:
If you find yourself hankering for something sweet or savory during the mid-afternoon or in the evening after dinner then these are usually symptoms of sugar addiction or carbohydrates cravings rather than hunger.
Being addicted to sugar and refined carbohydrates is a common issue.
Our diets are heavy in highly refined carbohydrates which are just another term for sugar.
If your diet contains large doses of potatoes, pasta, white bread, white rice, corn, and sweetened beverages then you’re in the danger zone of sugar addiction. Now it doesn’t mean you can’t eat these foods at all but there’s a balance to strike. Cravings can be managed in a two-prong attack.

The Right Portion Sizes:
If you eat the right food in the right portions you’ll be the right size.
So why is it that when some people pick up their fork they become possessed – struggling to put it down and only eating until they are uncomfortably full?
It’s a habit and a deep rooted one at that, hankering back to the past and tied to an event that can’t even be remembered now. The fact is you can be satisfied on less even if you think you can’t. But there are strategies to control your portions without staring down at a plate with just a few morsels on it which doesn’t satisfy either.
